I'm
Steve Klein and creator of Swing V. It was
a passion, a dream a vision or maybe some
obsessive compulsive behavior. I have a passion
for West Coast Swing
dancing and the preservation of it's rich
history and heritage.
The Goal of Swing V is to capture cutting edge
events of today, with an emphasis on preserving
the rich history of West Coast Swing as captured
through Video. To retain that
specialness, that timeless beauty we know in the
dance. Keeping these memories preserved
for those who wish to view them, and to work
together with other event directors,
videographers, for the preservation of these professionally
recorded events.
About Steve and Dance:
Well what can I say. My mom and dad met in a
Ballroom in downtown Portland. My first dance
with a girl was when I was 5 years old. She may
have been 4. She moved away so I had to find a
new partner...
My real dancing started up again as a teen.
As a teen, I always found dancing more enjoyable
than some of my other friends, but peer pressure
didn't slow me down. I decided to focus on
the skill. I started
West Coast Swing dancing in the early 90's. I also
explored other forms of dance such as Latin,
Tap, and Jazz. In 1993
I turned my attention on both swing and
country as I started competing in UCWDC
sanctioned events.
After 5 years of competing, I started
teaching and coaching other couples, and found
I wanted to return to my West Coast Swing
roots. In 1997 I focused on that aspect
of dancing, attending swing events and spreading
the joy by promoting these events to fellow dancers in
my local area.
I along with my wife held a very popular monthly
social dance at Sunnyside. These were held on
the 2nd Saturday of each month, and featured West Coast Swing and Country
dancing.
In 1999, I became one of the founding
members of
The
Portland Swing Dance Club, the first ever
West Coast Swing dance club in Portland, Oregon
(and at that time the first in Oregon). We opened
our monthly Sunnyside
Dance to help in it's formation signing up over
100 members that night. I then took the
leadership of Facilities Director and secured two main facilities used each month
for the PSDC social dances which are
still in use today and still going strong.
In 2001 I left the dance scene altogether to pursue a business
venture. It was a hard decision but one
that was for the best at the time. I found
myself "being called back" to the dance again 7 years
later in 2008.
Today I am enjoying the new style of West
Coast Swing and the great music being danced to. It's
almost like starting over again, but I am
enjoying the journey.
I am meeting a lot of new and exciting friends,
and enjoying the family of dancers out there.
